How to Build Your Own Boat Switch Panel Online in 5 minutes

Interactive Panel Builder Guide

Sometimes an old switch panel just needs a clean replacement, not a full custom build. Most of the time, you already know how many circuits you need, roughly how much room you have on the dash, and you just want a clean, clearly labeled panel that installs easily and works right out of the box.

That is exactly what the Interactive Panel Builder is made for. You choose the switch style, switch count, and circuit protection, drag each function into position on the panel, review your switch layout, and place your order. Your panel ships fully assembled, usually within 1 to 2 business days.

What the Panel Builder is and who it is for

The Panel Builder is our fastest route to a new marine switch panel upgrade. Instead of starting from a blank sheet, you start from a proven layout in one of six panel families.

Available Panel Families

  • Rocker switch panels, from 3 to 12 switches
  • Rocker switch panels with push resettable breakers, from 3 to 12 switches
  • Rocker switch panels with resettable breakers and dual USB charger, from 2 to 12 switches
  • Push button panels, from 3 to 10 switches
  • Push button panels with resettable breakers, from 3 to 12 switches
  • Push button panels with resettable breakers and dual USB charger, from 2 to 9 switches

It fits best when you are building a new boat, replacing a factory switch panel or adding a small accessory panel next to the helm.

1

Choose your switch style

Genuine Carling Contura V illuminated rocker switches are the traditional choice, and roughly 60 to 80 percent of our customers go this way. They are proven, familiar to anyone who has spent time at a helm, and the more budget friendly starting point in the builder. Carling switches won’t let you down. With multiples configurations and outputs you can select the switch function and the laser etched actuator and won’t fade with the time.

Bluewater Push Button Switches give your dash a modern and integrated look, allowing you to customize the actuators icons and colors. Bluewater switches are fully sealed with a stainless steel body and Deutsch connector style that allows you to do troubleshooting and service very easily. They are waterproof, use sealed Deutsch style. The Bluewater switches are available in latching, momentary, double latching and double momentary always backlit. Choose them when the premium look matters as much as function.

2

Pick the right switch count and panel size

Count every circuit you run today, from navigation and anchor lights to bilge, Livewell and Washdown pumps, then add one or two spare (Accessories) positions for whatever you plan to install next season (you can swap the actuator later with the right function. Our boat switch panel buyer's guide goes deeper on sizing your switch count to the boat.

Before you add a panel to your cart, check its listed dimensions against the opening on your dash and your existing mounting holes. A 3 switch Contura V panel, for example, measures 4.71 by 3.17 inches. The panel Drawing documents are right below the panel builder block. Check the drawing measurements, check twice, then build.

3

Decide how you want to protect each circuit

Switches only

The right pick when you already run an external fuse or bleaker box behind the dash. With good rear access, it gives you the cleanest look on the panel itself.

Switches with resettable breakers

Front mounted push to reset breakers put protection right at the helm, the smart choice when there is little or no access behind the dash.

Switches with resettable breakers and USB

Adds a Bluewater 45W dual USB fast charger so your buddies can charge their phones and tablets at the helm when they ride with you on the boat. The dual USB Charger is protected by its own breaker rated by the manufacturer specs.

4

Lay out and label your panel

Browse the available switch functions in the carousel, then double click or drag each one onto the panel in the position you want. Put the circuits you use most where your hand naturally lands and group related functions together.

Every actuator is laser etched through the top coating instead of UV printed, so icons and text will not fade in the sun, and the switch illumination shines through them for clear reading after dark.

5

Choose your finish and wiring jumpers

Pick Black High Gloss for a deep polished look or Black Matte Acrylic for a modern finish that cuts glare and hides fingerprints. You can also add optional jumpers. Blue 16 AWG jumpers link the panel illumination, black 16 AWG jumpers handle ground connections, and breaker panels offer breaker to breaker and breaker to switch jumpers as well, 10AWG and 14AWG respectively.

What arrives in the box

Panel Builder panels are cut from 3/16 inch marine grade cast acrylic and ship fully assembled with your switches, actuators, any breakers or USB charger, optional jumpers and stainless steel pan head mounting screws.

The switch output leads that run from the panel to your equipment are not included, so have your wire and terminals ready. Our guide on how to wire a switch panel walks you through the connections. Most orders ship within 1 to 2 business days and qualified US orders over $150 ship free. Because every panel is built to order, returns are only accepted for a defect or an error on our side, so confirm fit before you order.

Quick checklist before you build

  1. Measure your dash opening and note where the existing mounting holes sit.
  2. List every circuit you run and add one or two spares for future upgrades.
  3. Choose Contura V Rocker Switches or Bluewater 22mm Push Button Switches.
  4. Decide between breakers on the panel or an external fuse block.
  5. Pick your finish and add any jumpers you need.

Need something the builder cannot do?

Irregular dash shapes, thicker panels, hidden stud mounting or a panel that arrives fully prewired all call for a custom build. Our guide to custom switch panels explains the differences and walks you through how a custom order works.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Panel Builder switch panel take to ship?
Most Panel Builder panels are built and shipped within 1 to 2 business days, and in stock orders placed by 1 PM EST ship the same day.
Does the panel come prewired?
It ships fully assembled with switches, actuators and any optional jumpers installed. Switch output leads to your equipment are not included. For a fully prewired panel, choose a custom switch panel.
Should I choose Contura V rockers or 22mm push buttons?
Contura V rockers are the traditional, proven choice most customers pick. Bluewater 22mm push buttons give a more modern, integrated look with sealed Deutsch style connectors.
Will the switch labels fade in the sun?
No. The actuator graphics are laser etched through the top coating instead of UV printed, so they hold up to sun exposure and let the switch illumination shine through at night.
What’s the Amp rate of a Bluewater Push Button Switch?
20 Amps for 1 output switches and 2 x 10Amps in dual output switches like navigation and anchor.
